NFL Week 7 News, Tips, Salary Cap Numbers

Week 7 of the NFL regular season is upon us. This is the midway point for the regular seasons in most fantasy football leagues, yet it seems like most trends are still emerging.

A few players are having their breakout or career year: Devonta Freeman, Andy Dalton, and Deandre Hopkins. Guys are having bounceback years, like Keenan Allen and Larry Fitzgerald (and Andy Dalton). Some lesser limelights are shining, such as Gary Barnidge and Allan Robinson. And some can’t miss players are missing, like Eddie Lacy and Peyton Manning.

I’ve covered some of that in previous weekly recaps. I want to look ahead at the coming slate of games. A number of good matchups present themselves, while a few players find themselves in unexpectedly great positions to generate points. So read on and see which players to draft, which combos to stack, and which situations to fade.

I do something special this week, because I made a big list of DraftKings salary cap numbers. This should help you review the options.

In this article, I include:

  • Matchup information for Week 7
  • DraftKings Salary Cap Figures for Week 7

These should help you get a feel for the trends, along with a who’s who of players to avoid. Fading at the right time is a key strategy, and it’s a subtle art, because it includes avoiding the obvious choices and the disappointing players at the same time. I include the cap figures to help visualize the options before signing up for a contest. Remember, owners have the option of withdrawing from a contest fairly late in the morning on Sunday. If you decide you don’t have the time or money to play, you can drop out of an event at the last minute.

Quarterbacks to Consider

Philip Rivers is a cheaper option against the Raiders, but he probably will be missing Keenan Allen and many owners might start him against Oakland. If you think he won’t miss a beat against Oakland and Allen is announced “Out”, this might deflate his numbers a bit.

Blake Bortles continues to put up bigger numbers than his salary cap figure. Of course, he’s also starting to get some attention from DFS players. Those who want a contrarian pick should consider Joe Flacco. We all know that Flacco is the model of inconsistency. That makes him less likely to be picked by the bulk of DFS owners, but in the right situation, the streaky passer puts up big numbers. The Cardinals have given up big totals in the passing game this year, so this might be the one game in a month Flacco puts up big totals.

The total contrarian pick should be Josh McCown, who comes off an average game to play a fierce Rams pass rush which is coming off a bye. This should be a disaster for the Browns on the road, especially after losing an emotional overtime game. But McCown had put up nice numbers in 3 straight weeks before Week 6 and he continued to hook up with Gary Barnidge (2 more TDs), so if you want to see if the hot streak skips a week and continues, you might consider a QB who many will pass over.

Injury substitutes to consider are Landry Jones (Steelers) and Zach Mettenberger (Titans). Mettenberger is of special interest to me, because the Titans play the Jaguars. The game takes place in London and the franchise might not want to expose their rookie franchise QB to a long flight and additional responsibilities. The Jags Defense has been a sieve this year. Zack Mettenberger was said to be looking good in the offseason. If you’re looking for a cheap player few should be starting, he’s your option. Landry Jones looked solid in limited duty behind Michael Vick, and he has better weapons. The Steelers play the Kansas City Chiefs, who are still reeling from the Jamaal Charles injury. But the Chiefs Defense is better than the Jags.

Running Back Matchups to Exploit

No surprise, Devonta Freeman versus the Tennessee Titans is a strong play. Of course, that also means 25% or more of the entrants in the big tournaments are likely to play Freeman. You have to decide whether you want to lock in the fantasy points he’s likely to accumulate, or else find a cheaper option.

For instance, Todd Gurley plays the Browns while coming off a bye week. Gurley had two 150+ yard games in his first two NFL starts. As he appears to be fully healthy coming off the knee injury and as talented as advertised, Gurley should rip Cleveland’s Defense. Similarly, Doug Martin is coming off a bye week and gets the Washington Redskins Defense. Adding Gurley and Martin costs $9,900 on Draftkings. Freeman costs $7,900, leaving you only $2,000 to add a second runner (as compared to the other tandem). Drafting Devonta Freeman at this point is likely to require you to skimp on 2-3 different positions than if you added two lower-priced players likely to post good numbers.

Even cheaper, you can get Lamar Miller against the Houston Texans for $4600. The Dolphins came out of the bye with a new head coach and new enthusiasm, winning 38-10 over the Titans. Dan Campbell used to give radio interviews in the DFW area when he was a backup tight end for the Dallas Cowboys. He’s a likable, laid-back guy, yet he calls for a no-nonsense, hard work approach to football. Dan Campbell had to work hard to stay in the NFL, because he wasn’t the most talented guy. Yet he’s personable and I bet he’ll have a net-positive impact on the Dolphins. Coming off the Joe Philbin era, he’s likley to have a big impact in the early weeks of the new regime. I predict Lamar Miller is going to have a breakout streak of games here soon.

Theo Riddick is still a cheap plug-in player who is ideal for the Flex position. Theo Riddick’s competition appears to be injured, as he Joique Bell is still injured and Zack Zenner is on IR. Ameer Abdullah is the starter, but Theo Riddick has gotten 6-10 receptions a game recently and the team plays the lowly Vikings Defense this week.

Christine Michael is another flier to consider. Word out of Cowboys’ camp was he might replace Joseph Randle at starting RB, just as Matt Cassell is set to replace Brandon Wheedan. The Dallas Cowboys come off a bye week with 2 weeks to prepare, rested and ready, and their backs are against the wall. They need wins to stay close, until Tony Romo and Dez Bryant return. The New York Giants also have their back against the wall, but they also come off a short week and a drubbing at the hands of a lackluster-looking Eagles team. Christine Michael is a high upside $3000 player.

James Starks is suddenly in a running back by committee with Eddie Lacy, it would seem. That’s what Mike McCarthy sounded like in his post-game press conference. It’s a bizarre turn of events. For now, fade Eddie Lacy at all costs. He barely got on the field Sunday, and he apparently has no injuries to account for it. The Packers are on bye in Week 7, but keep these notes in mind for Week 8.

Wide Receiver Options

Michael Floyd suddenly showed signs of life. A year ago, Michael Floyd was the heir apparent. Now, John Brown and Larry Fitzgerald are getting most of the looks and putting up big numbers. But Michael Floyd is in a high-powered offense, so if he becomes a factor, he might become a real factor. Keep him on your watch list, anyway.

Malcom Floyd, Stevie Johnson, and Dontrelle Inman each represent decent matchups, if Keenan Allen misses Week 7. The Chargers play the Raiders. Dontrelle Inman is particularly interesting, because he’s been getting more targets recently anyway, and he scored a touchdown last week after Keenan Allen went out of the game. If the Chargers’ #1 receiver missing time, Dontrelle Inman should be the one most likely to benefit.

Here are other low-priced options. Martavis Bryant had a big return to action last week, and he could get Ben Roethlisberger back in Week 7. Richard Matthews continues to be a top option for the Dolphins, who play the Houston Texans this coming game.

  • Allen Hurns – $5300 – Buf@Jax
  • Martavis Bryant – $4700 – Pit@KC
  • Rishard Matthews – $4300 – Hou@Mia
  • Willie Snead – $4300 – NO@Ind
  • Stefon Diggs – $4200 – Min@Det
  • Lance Moore – $3500 – Min@Det

Willie Snead didn’t do much on Thursday night, but he was likely getting double-coverage for the first time. That opened up Benjamin Watson to have a huge game. With Marques Colston returning and Benjamin Watson filling up the Colts’ game film preparations, expect Willie Snead to have a little more room to manuever. Week-after-week, Snead has been Drew Brees’s favorite target.

Stefon Diggs is starting to blossom as a rookie wideout. Diggs appears to have supplanted Mike Wallace as the starter for the Minnesota Vikings. Meanwhile, Allen Hurns could be Blake Bortes’s chief outlet in the game in London, because Allen Robinson might be out (or hampered), due to injury.

Tight End Matchups to

Austin Seferian-Jenkins is about ready to return for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. ASJ had a big Week 1 before getting injured in Week 2. The Bucs have a rookie quarterback who looked like he was going to lean on his big, athletic tight end. I expect more of the same when Austin Seferian-Jenkins returns.

Benjamin Watson had a huge Week 6, and he’s now inching up near the Top 10 in most fantasy football league formats. Ladarius Green continues to be a viable option, despite the return of Antonio Gates. If he Kenenan Allen misses Week 7, plan on Ladarius Green getting enough looks to remain viable.

  • Benjamin Watson – $3300 – NO@Ind – Kickoff: 01:00PM ET
  • Austin Seferian-Jenkins – $3200 – TB@Was – Kickoff: 01:00PM ET
  • Ladarius Green – $2900 – Oak@SD – Kickoff: 04:05PM ET
  • Jordan Cameron – $3300 – Hou@Mia – Kickoff: 01:00PM ET
  • Jordan Reed – $4200 – TB@Was – Kickoff: 01:00PM ET

Jordan Reed is improving, so he could be an option in Week 7. If so, he’s a good start. Jordan Reed is usually a productive player, if he plays. As for Jordan Cameron, he has yet to make a connection to Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill threw two interceptions targeting Cameron on Sunday, and nearly had a third. Dan Campbell is a former tight end, so expect him to push the tight end position at a point. Maybe he already is, producing the interceptions. It might click eventually.

This should give DFS owners plenty of data to sift through. Remember, in the NFL Sunday Million and Millionaire Maker, it’s better to research the best options that everyone else isn’t like to use. If a matchup is going to be used by 30% of the owners in the contest, it probably should be faded.
